Heroic Pit Bull Takes Bullets And Wins Valor Award

A family feels lucky to be the owners of the heroic pit bull, D-Boy, reported New9.com. When an intruder entered their home D-Boy distracted him, taking three gun shots. The pit bull’s owner stated that if it weren’t for D-Boy she would have been the one shot.

“If he wouldn't have distracted the guy, the guy probably would've shot me," said Roberta Shoemaker, D-Boy’s owner. "I didn't know what to do he told me to get down on the ground, and I was so scared, I couldn't move."

Lean More About Pitbulls

"If he wasn't there and wouldn't have done what he did, I could've came home to no family," Angelic Shoemaker said.

The Humane Society has awarded D-Boy with the Dog of Valor Award for his heroic act. They held an online poll in which 6,000 people voted for this incredible pit bull.

"D-boy's story really touched the heart of the majority of the voters and he won the dog version of the People's Choice Award," said Cynthia Armstrong, director of the Oklahoma Humane Society of the U.S.

D-boy was chosen out of 15 finalists, no small feat for this heroic pup.

The intruder busted through the front door confronting Roberta who was on the couch. Roberta sat silent while D-Boy ran in from another room. He charged the intruder risking his own life for the safety of the family.

Pitbull Breeders

Before the pit bull could reach the intruder he was shot three times. Spooked by the pit bull the intruder ran away. And Roberta and her family were safe.

Police do not know why the intruder entered the home.

The city joined together in supporting D-Boy and helped the family pay his medical bills. According to the family vet, the pit bull is healthy and should recover from the gunshot wounds. News stations and the family have also received several communications from people across the country wanting to help.

People have also begun contacting the vet hospital directly offering to help with expenses.

"That just made my Christmas, an early Christmas gift to be able to have my dog home and not have to worry about paying his bill," Trawick said. "It's a blessing it really is. God blessed us and I hope God blesses everybody who helped us."

While many Americans fear pit bulls because of their aggressive nature, a well-trained and loved pit bull can serve as an amazing watchdog and family pet. The news is saturated with stories of pit bulls attacking humans, but it also contains many stories showing the heroism and valor of this breed.

"All pits are not bad," Roberta Shoemaker said. "I mean, just because of the breed of the dog, doesn't mean they're bad."
