Fundamental First Aid Advice, Do You Know What To Do In A Medical Emergency?

Safety is a constant requirement that should never leave your mind.

There is a natural instinct in most people to rush to the rescue of those in peril. disregarding the severity of the circumstances and no matter what nasty accident or injury has just occurred, it is vital that you maintain as calm as possible and think clearly.

Safety is enhanced by a heightened awareness of your immediate environment and an awareness and monitoring of immediate hazards, caution in this nature serves to protect us from harm. By definition an accident is the result of uncontrolled events, were the events that lead to the accident under control then the injury would have been avoided. Along the same lines, it is now the persons condition that is out for control, by understanding first aid, you will hopefully be able to control the condition of your patient until professional help can take over, but think first! For example, if you see a person lying in the road after being struck by a vehicle, stop and check its safe to proceed before you approach the victim, you are not going to be able to offer much help after you have been struck by the next car moving down the road. Make sure that the danger that caused the injury has passed or has been made safe or at least controlled as much as possible before you proceed. first aid training Norwich

ABC of first aid

A is for Airways
Whether you should physically check the patients airways is dependant on if the victim is conscious and clearly breathing, or unconscious.

If conscious, the victim can be asked to speak, if they are able to speak easily, this is confirmation of an unobstructed airway, unconscious patients on the other hand cannot speak. Therefore a simple series of examinations can be used to confirm clear airways. Firstly check that you can hear the patient breathing by listening with you ear close to their mouth. Secondly can you feel air being expelled on your cheek as you listen? Is the patients abdomen rising and falling to show they are breathing?

B is for breathing
What do I do If A Patient Is Not Breathing? If the above tests confirm that a person has stopped breathing you should initiate cpr right away, when the person starts to breath again they should be placed in the recovery position.

C is for Circulation

Ok so we have now confirmed that the patient has clear airways and is breathing.

Now you need to determine that the persons blood is circulating the body, circulation can be hindered by several things including broken and fractured bones. To confirm the patient has blood circulation check the temperature of your patients skin, and also look for any loss of colour or areas turning blue. If you think the persons circulation has stopped, you should start cpr

If your patient is bleeding, follow the below steps to stop or control bleeding and wait for the emergence services to arrive.

Whilst the emergency services are on route to your location there are things you can do to help ensure that the condition of your patient does not worsen, it is also a good idea to try to aid the emergency services by making it easy for them to spot the place where the injured person is. Below are several tips on how this can be done. first aid training Norwich
• Ensure all pets are locked away from the area
• Turn on outside lights
• Have any relevant medical information to hand including current medication
• Have someone stand on the roadside to direct the ambulance crew to the patient if possible
• Move any object or vehicle that may cause an obstruction to the crew allowing them safe access and egress with a stretcher
• Continue to monitor the patient throughout and do not leave alone if possible.
