Bacterial Vaginosis During Pregnancy

Bacterial Vaginosis During Pregnancy
By Jenna Garvin

Suffering from bacterial vaginosis at anytime is not only bothersome and embarrassing, but it can disrupt your life. Dealing with such a condition during pregnancy is even worse! You worry about your unborn baby and about infection. This article will outline what types of bacteria cause this problem and how to go about curing it.

What is Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)?

BV is an overgrowth of the normal bacteria always present in the vagina. The results are a foul smell (fishy smell), and grayish or excessive discharge.
What are the Symptoms?

The most common symptoms are foul smell and discharge. Any amount of discharge that is not normal could be a symptom of BV. However, when you are pregnant you have more cervical mucous then you usually do when you are not pregnant. This makes it a bit more difficult to diagnose bacterial vaginosis without seeing a doctor.

Problems Caused During Pregnancy
During pregnancy, bacterial vaginosis can be especially troublesome. Having the infection can lead to:
* Premature labor
* Premature birth
* Amniotic fluid infection
* Uterine infection after delivery

All of which are very dangerous and can result in problems or even death for your baby. This is why diagnosis and treatment is so very important. And the earlier the better!

Treating BV - What you NEED to know
The most common treatment for BV is antibiotics. As with most bacterial infections, doctors jump immediately to get their prescription pad instead of helping patients to treat the cause of the problem.

Antibiotics in this instance are NOT the answer, especially while pregnant, if you can avoid it. According to Melbourne Sexual Health Centre, 77% of women being treated with antibiotics will have their vaginosis return within months. Antibiotics merely disrupt your good flora and only temporarily reduce the bad.

Pregnancy can bring so much joy to a family. However, it can also pose innumerable health risks to the woman and to the baby, as well. Pregnancy is oftentimes one of the most awaited events in a woman's life, especially if the woman has had a hard time trying to conceive. This means that when a woman is pregnant taking some precautions for health maintenance is downright required.

Here are some ways that a pregnant woman can employ to ensure the health of her baby and her self, too.
Eat well, conceive well.

It's not true that you have to eat for two when pregnant. Eating more than the amount of food that is enough for one person will only cause the unwanted bloat. According to research, a pregnant woman will only need an extra 200 to 300 calories per day. And who knows, you might be already eating those extra calories. Eating healthy food will do the mother and the young life inside the mother just right. Of course, those extra calories should not come from junk food.

Supplement your wellness.
